Curatorial Assistance Project

Project Feature Made at MAC – Celebrating Ceramics

Venue: Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), Birmingham

Dates: 20 January – 2 June 2024

Role: Curatorial Intern

Celebrating Ceramics brought together a curated selection of ceramic works created by MAC’s studio users, exploring clay as both a tactile tradition and an evolving contemporary medium. Showcased in public vitrines, the exhibition featured wheel-thrown vessels, hand-built forms, and experimental glazing that reflected the individuality and shared spirit of MAC’s creative community.

As part of the curatorial team, I supported the exhibition from concept to installation—drafting artist submission forms, coordinating logistics, and assisting with object display. I also helped refine visual layouts and contributed to exhibition writing and documentation.

This project sharpened my ability to collaborate across departments while reinforcing the role of accessible, community-rooted practices in exhibition-making.

Project Feature New Narratives in Photography

Venue: Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), Birmingham

Dates: 8 February – 21 May 2024

Role: Curatorial Intern

New Narratives in Photography showcased lens-based works by Asad Ali, Hira Noor Ulhaq, Laiba, and Waleed Zafar, supported by the Transforming Narratives initiative. The exhibition reflected on themes of diaspora, memory, and spatial belonging, drawing parallels between Lahore and Birmingham.

By blending photography, text, and installation, the artists offered intimate reflections that challenged dominant visual narratives. The exhibition celebrated personal archives, community voices, and experimental forms as valid tools of storytelling.

As a curatorial intern, I contributed to the exhibition’s planning and installation, assisting with artist liaison, condition reporting, and interpretive writing. I helped shape accessible engagement materials and contributed to exhibition layout and flow.

The role sharpened my collaborative and curatorial skills, enriched my understanding of transnational projects, and deepened my commitment to inclusive and socially conscious exhibition practices.
